How Nature and Terrain Made This Project Tricky
Working in this Seattle neighborhood meant dealing with more than just paving:
Slope & Shade
The terrain dropped steeply in places. Sunlight barely reached parts of the driveway beneath tall evergreens. Asphalt needs warmth to set well, and shade slows curing and can lead to damp retention.
Curved Edges & Trees
The driveway winds around mature trees and garden beds. We had to be precise around curves, avoiding damage to trunks, root systems, and shrubbery.
Drainage Issues
Water was collecting near the existing storm drain, threatening erosion and washouts near the rock retaining wall. Without proper slope adjustments, the new asphalt might just replicate that problem.
Retaining Walls & Existing Structures
The rock wall bordered part of the driveway. Any edge work had to maintain clean lines without undermining the wall’s integrity or disturbing the soil behind it.
What We Did—Step by Step
Site Assessment & Preparation
We began with careful measuring of elevation and slope. Using these data, we planned minor grading adjustments so water would flow toward the storm drain. We mapped the curves and marked tree drip lines to protect roots all along the edges.
Next, we removed the old pavement in affected areas, especially where the asphalt was uneven or layered improperly. We also cleaned out debris, trimmed back shrubs, and protected plants with barriers.
Edge Work & Curves
Around mature trees and garden beds, we installed clean, curved edging. Using forms that match the natural sweep of the driveway, we held back the asphalt from roots and preserved landscaping.
Our crews carefully shaped the interface between the rock retaining wall and driveway so the seam looked intentional—not patched or forced.
Drainage Integration & Grading
We regraded certain sections to improve the slope toward the storm drain.
In areas where water had pooled, we installed a slight crown in the drive, and added/sub-grade infill to channel runoff reliably. Where needed, we repaired or refilled edging adjacent to the storm drain so water couldn’t seep under or erode the substrate.
Asphalt Paving
With prep done, we laid down high-quality asphalt mix appropriate for Seattle’s climate.
Our surface course was compacted expertly, especially around curves and elevation changes. Shade areas got extra attention—uniform compaction and checking for any low spots where water could collect.
Finishing Touches
Once asphalt paving was complete, the edges were cleaned up.
Trees and landscaping were unharmed. The sweeping curves were seamless, matching the natural setting. Rock wall joints were clean, and no asphalt overlapped unintentionally. We sealed the surface edge where it met the storm drain to prevent water infiltration or erosion.
